During the past 10 years, fibromyalgia has emerged from relative obscurity to its current recognition as a very common cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain. In the United States alone, 3 to 6 million people have fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is the most common cause of generalized pain in general medical practice.
